Frequently Asked Questions

No, chiropractors are direct providers, meaning you can see a chiropractor without a referral. Chiropractors are great initial providers because they help improve movement and can also provide referrals to other providers if or as needed. Our chiropractors have great relationships with other providers in Raleigh and can ensure you’re in the right place.

Chiropractic care is one of the most cost-effective treatments for musculoskeletal pain. Our treatment prices reflect the high value of the services we provide and still pale in comparison to the cost of injections or prescriptions, which don’t impact the cause of pain and simply mask pain.
-
You do not need a referral for acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture can be accessed directly.

Acupuncture needles are typically not much thicker than a strand of hair and the insertion is practically painless. Some points on the patient’s body may be more sensitive to the pressure than others. If so, you may feel a slight tingling sensation, sort of like when you bump the tip of your elbow or funny bone. After the treatment, the areas targeted may feel itchy, heavy, warm, or even numb. Some people feel immediate relief. For others, the healing process is slower; it may take a few days before the patient notices a positive change in their symptoms. Tui Na massage may also be used by a certified practitioner to ease any lingering pain and aid the healing process.

Some of the physical benefits of Acupuncture include pain reduction, restored health from a recent or long-standing illness, shorter recovery time from injuries, decreased symptoms of stress, strengthened immune system function, and improved blood circulation.
The World Health Organization recognizes Acupuncture as an effective treatment modality for many ailments impacting the body’s systems, including musculoskeletal, ear, nose and throat, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, gynecological, psycho emotional and neurological. Many have also reported that their ability to sleep and handle stress improved after treatment.

Yes! The body undergoes a multitude of changes during pregnancy, and maintaining proper musculoskeletal health is important during this time. Studies have shown that those who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy have less pain and even shorter labor times than those who do not. Our doctors help women remain safely active during their pregnancy for their health and the health of their baby.

This depends on what we’re working on, but a treatment plan in our office typically lasts anywhere from 12-24 visits. This is because we’re working to get to the root of the problem rather than just covering up symptoms. Once you’ve completed a treatment plan, we recommend chiropractic care once per month because research shows that people who see a chiropractor just once per month spend two weeks less per year in pain!
-
Absolutely! Chiropractors can treat babies and our chiropractors are specially-trained in pediatric chiropractic care. They use very gentle adjustments (about as much pressure as you’d use to check for ripeness in a tomato) and teach parents exercises to help support care at home. The way we learn to move in the first year of life actually forms our hip and shoulder joints, so it’s incredibly important that babies move well! Our doctors utilize the principles of Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization in conjunction with a chiropractic evaluation to assess pediatric patients. With that information, they can determine a treatment plan for your child that will ensure that they are as healthy and functional as possible.

Dry Needling and Acupuncture both use fine needles, but they have different purposes. Dry Needling treats trigger points in muscles and acupuncture addresses energy flow throughout the body.
Dry Needling is a diagnostic and therapeutic technique utilized for treatment of musculoskeletal issues. We use solid, thin, monofilament needles to insert into soft tissues in order to alleviate pain and improve function.
Acupuncture activates the movement of energy forces that nourish tissue, stimulate blood flow, and enhance the body's internal systems. Fine needles are inserted into specific meridian points throughout the body to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

Insurance sometimes covers chiropractic care, but minimally so. Most insurance providers simply cover one chiropractic adjustment and don’t cover any additional therapies, even though research has shown that the combination of manual therapy with chiropractic adjustments is more beneficial for patients. The type of comprehensive care we provide in our office is not covered by insurance.
-
Insurance occasionally covers acupuncture, but does not cover the breadth of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM supports overall health and wellness, while insurance covers short-lasting relief.

TriangleCRC is the local hub for Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS). This is an internationally-recognized rehabilitative approach to care. Dr. Mumma was the first certified DNS practitioner in North Carolina. Now popularized by Dr. Peter Attia's book Outlive, patients are seeking DNS providers to ensure optimal health. The purpose of the technique is to promote proper activation and coordination of the neuromuscular system. DNS has produced amazing success in cerebral palsy, scoliosis, and stroke cases to name a few, and is equally as effective in the treatment of muscuoloskeletal pain, especially core and pelvic floor dysfunction. Our doctors are part of a small but growing group of practitioners in the US who have extensive training and experience in DNS therapy, which is quickly gaining exposure and demand.

Yes! Our chiropractors do physiotherapy, but we aren’t Physical Therapists, so this will be different. And a lot of patients who fail to improve with exercise-only PT find incredible benefit from our combination of chiropractic care plus exercise and manual therapies. We are focused on getting to the root cause, so we start with a thorough diagnostic evaluation of neurologic and orthopedic findings and then determine the best plan of care. While your care will include exercises, it also includes a lot more. So if you’ve “failed” PT, that doesn’t mean you’ll “fail” chiropractic care.

All chiropractors are different. There are well over 200 chiropractic techniques, so each chiropractor has a slightly different approach to care. What we share in common is helping bodies to move better. Where TriangleCRC is different from other practices is our strong rehabilitative focus. We want our patients to move better, not just feel better. Our DNS-based approach to rehab ensures that patients have more efficient movement patterns. And our comprehensive approach to care that includes not just chiropractic adjustments, but a ton of other therapies like cupping, dry needling, acupuncture, shockwave, Graston, FAKTR, McKenzie Therapy, and many more, means that we likely have a tool in our arsenal that can help you and your specific case. Our cold plunge and infrared sauna are also incredible for supporting overall wellness. We have a referral network of some of the best providers in the Triangle, so even if we don’t solve your problem, we can send you to a trusted colleague.

Our doctors can order imaging for you if it’s necessary, but they’re not reliant upon it. One of the benefits of seeing a chiropractor is that they’re trained in and excel at manual palpation (feeling with their hands). X-rays and MRIs can demonstrate findings, but they are static images: they don’t show how a body moves. They also offer plenty of inconsequential findings. Orthopedic and neurological testing done at your initial evaluation give our doctors clear information on how to best approach your care. If they need more information, they can order an x-ray or MRI.
